The Best Practice of QA and Testing for E-Commerce Applications: Use of Grey Box Testing

We often take this for granted but testing never really ends. Time dedicated to testing is often reduced by project constraints, decreasing the number of bugs discovered. However, we can improve the quality of our testing effort through better planning? Doing things right the first time and asking yourself the key question, "Where is the value in what I am doing?" can go a long way toward building quality products, but how do we get there?

This Grey Box Testing presentation will focus on the various testing techniques that can be used to improve the quality of your planning processes and subsequent testing efforts. The following practices will be described along with examples of how they can be used to plan and add value to your testing efforts.

Biography of Alex Samurin
Alex Samurin graduated from Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Polytechnic University in 1975 and holds the equivalent to a Bachelor of Science Diploma in Technical Science. He has 25 years of experience in system Research & Development, Information Technology, Quality Assurance and testing across various industries. This includes experience with FMS and JIT systems and a decision support student information management system that is utilized by the Toronto School Board of Education.

Since 1999, Mr. Samurin is a Senior QA Analyst at Teranet Inc., a leading edge provider of e-commerce solutions and integrated information systems. He currently performs QA and testing activities on the high security e-business J2EE application for MAG.

Biography of Joe Larizza
Joe Larizza, is the Support and Quality Assurance Manager of International Financial Data Services, a multinational software development organization specializing in mutual fund record keeping systems (Transfer Agency). During his six year tenure, Joe has progressed through various positions at International Financial Data Services, and its sister company CFDS Limited including Client Relationship Manager and Quality Assurance Manager. He has undertaken a number of strategic initiatives in order to improve the quality of DST's iFast (Client Server), iFast Desktop (GUI), and iFast eAdvisor (Web) applications and to distinguish DST products and client satisfaction levels from others in the industry. These include expansion of testing programs and establishment of testing standards and procedures; implementation of a Quality Metrics program to measure the impact of process changes; evaluation of an IT Division against the Capability Maturity Model; and implementation of Automated Testing using the Behavior Model and Data Driven scripts. Mr. Larizza has earned a reputation for competency and leadership ability in the field of quality assurance and testing of software.

Prior to joining International Financial Data Services, Mr. Larizza held a number of positions in the financial services and investment industries within organizations such as Canada Life Insurance, and Fidelity Investments. Mr. Larizza is a member of the Board of Directors for the Toronto Association of Software Quality and volunteers for the Quality Assurance Institute of Canada. He is a Certified Quality Analyst and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics, and the Canadian Securities Course.
